How Could A Good God Allow Suffering?
Belief in an Age of Skepticism
Tim Keller
Veritas Forum - MIT 2008

I stumbled across this talk by Tim Keller today, totally by accident. I thought it was very appropriate given the recent tornado tragedy in Moore, Oklahoma.

I REALLY encourage you to watch this - even if you think you have all the answers you need on this subject. I know I got something out of it.

“Religion and Science: Alleged Conflicts” - Alvin Plantinga

These days it is almost a given that people will assume that science and religion are in a fight to the death. Only one will survive. They will be forever in conflict and they will never come to peace with one another.

There is some truth to this conflict. For example on the Christian side conflict arises when people believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old and that evolution is completely false. This obviously is in conflict with pretty much all of moderns science, which says that the earth is in fact over 4 billion years old and evolution is the best explanation we have to explain the diversity of life on earth.

I’m an atheist because no loving God would create a creature incapable of scratching every inch of its own body.

This is the dumbest thing I’ve read in a long time.

It’s also kinda a joke :p

I get that it’s supposed to be a joke, it…

The OP was joking about how he can’t scratch his own back, not about God having a body. I probably reblogged it and that bit was in his/her tags and I forgot to add it.. it is kind of important… sorry!

Ahh, that makes sense and is actually funny. Sorry, I thought you were talking about God scratching His back which is dumb.

I get that it’s supposed to be a joke, it just doesn’t make sense and I don’t think it’s funny.

Don’t get me wrong, I do actually appreciate humor even when it is directed at Christian things. For example, there are two new movies coming out making fun of Christian ideas about the end of the world and Revelation - they actually look kind of funny. Google “Rapturepalooza” and “The End.”

Humor works when it is joking about something real. No self-respecting Christian thinks God has a body so the joke just doesn’t make any sense.
